Night Sky Caravan Farm
Situated on a wine farm 17km from Bonnievale (and 34km from Robertson) Night Sky offers the hardy weekender a nicely laid out campsite and six Wendyhouse-style timber chalets, both arranged around a pretty farm dam and backdropped by the Riviersonderend and Langeberg mountains.
With most eyes pointing towards the dam this is a good option for nervous parents, who would like their children to have fun in the water but without the constant nail-biting worry. The campsite is open to both tents and caravans, and as far as camping goes it's a comfortable experience, with grass-covered sites, 24 power points, braai spots and clean ablutions.
For a little more comfort, Night Sky's cabins are the way to go. Although we haven't yet seen them firsthand, they appear to be fairly basic affairs, but with all the essentials, including fireplaces in the larger units. Basically the bigger the chalet you book, the more home comforts and better appointment you can expect. What you shouldn't expect though is much in the way of privacy as the chalets and the happy campers lie cheek by jowl, especially when things get busy.
Turning to the activities, the dam seems to be the main focus. Apart from swimming and fishing for black bass, canoes are available. If the campsite starts feeling a little too intimate there is the option of taking a walk in the veld or through the vineyards, bird-watching (45 species ticked to date) and racing around on your mountain bike.
Bottomline: if you are looking for a sociable venue where your kids can have a lot of fun, Night Sky appears to be a good call.
